Bill O'Leary fought in the U.S. "Mighty 8th" based out of England. His squadron of B-17's ("Flying Fortress") flew many missions and he witnessed many friends never return. In his own words:
"We (the crew) were assigned to the 547th Bomb Squadron in the 384th Bomb Group. Our B-17 crew consisted of nine members. Today, there are three of us still looking down at the grass: Myself (Co-Pilot/Pilot); John Young (Flight Engineer/Top Turret Gunner) and Jack Garstak (Radio Operator/Gunner). I was the youngest member of the crew. I flew my first mission the day before my twentieth birthday. The oldest person on the crew was the navigator at age twenty-four. Youth had its advantages---we were invincible, or so we thought."
What the Heroes of War World II did can never be re-paid but telling them "Thank You" every chance we get can be a start.
Thank You Mr. O'Leary and the members of your bomb group!
These Pictures are of bomb runs Bill n' crew participated in, they show squadron formations, bomb drops over Germany in an attempt to hit railroad targets, Flak hits on a plane after "bombs away," the group picture and finally Bills Monkey that he bought for $1.00 from a local. (He had to get rid of it after three days because of the havoc he wreaked at the barracks!)
